Understanding Al-Fatihah
مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ
“Master of the Day of Judgment”
Al-Fatihah 1:4 · Saheeh International
Explanation

Allah is described as the sole Master of the Day when every deed is judged. Some reciters read Mālik (Owner) and others Malik (King) — both are authentic recitations, and scholars note the two meanings complement one another: complete ownership and complete authority on that Day.

What does “Yawm ad-Dīn” refer to?
{{ o.label }}{{ o.mark }}
{{ quizFbTitle }}
“Dīn” here means recompense — the Day when every soul receives the result of its deeds (Al-Infitar 82:17–19). It is not tied to a weekday or a season.
Ask why
GROUNDED IN CURATED SOURCES
Classical tafsir explains “ad-Dīn” in this ayah as al-jazā’ — recompense. Ibn Kathir cites the ayah “the Day when no soul will have power over another” to show why this Day is singled out: on it, ownership and authority belong to Allah alone.[1][2]

Hadith · Intentions
إِنَّمَا الْأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ، وَإِنَّمَا لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مَا نَوَى
“Actions are judged by intentions, and every person will have only what they intended.”
Sahih al-Bukhari · 1
Sahih Muslim · 1907
Grading: Sahih — agreed upon (Bukhari & Muslim)
Narrated by Umar ibn al-Khattab
What does this teach?

The value of any deed depends on the intention behind it. Two people may perform the same outward action and receive entirely different rewards. Scholars call this one of the hadith on which the whole religion turns.

Context

The narration continues with the example of migration: whoever migrated for Allah and His Messenger, his migration is for them; whoever migrated for worldly gain or marriage, his migration is for that. Imam al-Bukhari opened his collection with it.

Apply your understanding
Yusuf donates to a relief fund mainly so colleagues see his name on the donor board. Later he regrets this and quietly gives again, seeking only Allah's pleasure. Which principle from this hadith applies?
{{ o.label }}{{ o.mark }}
{{ hadithFbTitle }}
The same outward act — giving charity — carries different weight depending on intention. The second gift, made sincerely, is the one this hadith describes as rewarded according to what was intended.
